Background of the study
Forensic anthropology has become a pivotal tool in the investigation of unexplained deaths, particularly in contexts influenced by cult activities. In Ife Central Local Government Area, Osun State, incidents of cult-related deaths have raised serious concerns regarding public safety and the integrity of legal investigations. Forensic anthropological methods, including skeletal analysis, trauma assessment, and contextual interpretation, are critical for unveiling the truth behind these mysterious fatalities (Balogun, 2023). Recent improvements in digital imaging and forensic documentation have enhanced the accuracy of post-mortem examinations (Olawale, 2024). Nonetheless, limitations such as inadequate forensic facilities and insufficient specialized training persist, complicating the recovery and analysis of skeletal remains (Adebola, 2025). The interplay of cultural practices, secretive group dynamics, and community resistance further challenges forensic efforts. This study critically evaluates the role of forensic anthropology in addressing cult-related deaths, aiming to strengthen investigative procedures and support judicial outcomes. By analyzing case studies and reviewing current methodologies, the research seeks to identify gaps in practice and recommend practical improvements to enhance forensic investigations in this complex environment. The study will utilize qualitative and quantitative analyses to provide a robust framework for understanding forensic challenges across varied contexts globally.

Statement of the problem
Cult-related deaths in Ife Central Local Government Area pose significant challenges for forensic investigations. Despite technological advancements, the secretive nature of cult activities and cultural sensitivities complicate the recovery and identification of skeletal remains (Balogun, 2023). Limited forensic infrastructure and a shortage of trained specialists further hinder accurate post-mortem analyses (Olawale, 2024). Inadequate coordination among law enforcement and forensic experts exacerbates these issues (Adebola, 2025). This research addresses the persistent gaps in forensic methods for investigating cult-related fatalities, which undermine both public safety and the judicial process, calling for urgent improvements in investigative practices immediately necessary.

Objectives of the study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of forensic anthropological techniques in investigating cult-related deaths.

  • To identify challenges and gaps in current forensic practices in Ife Central Local Government Area.

  • To recommend improvements that enhance the accuracy and timeliness of forensic investigations in cult-related cases.

Research questions:

  • What forensic methods are currently employed in investigating cult-related deaths in Ife Central?

  • What are the main challenges affecting forensic analyses in cult-related fatalities?

  • How can forensic procedures be improved to better address the complexities of cult-related investigations?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Advanced forensic techniques significantly enhance the identification of remains in cult-related death cases.

  • H2: Inadequate forensic infrastructure negatively impacts the investigation of cult-related fatalities.

  • H3: Strategic improvements in forensic methods will lead to more accurate and timely case resolutions.

Significance of the study
This study provides critical insights into the forensic challenges of investigating cult-related deaths, thereby aiding the development of more effective forensic protocols. It is expected to enhance inter-agency collaboration, improve forensic training, and support judicial processes. The research findings will be instrumental in informing policy reforms and improving investigative practices, ensuring greater public safety and justice for affected communities.

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of terms:

  • Cult-related Deaths: Fatalities linked to activities of secretive groups or cults.

  • Forensic Anthropology: The scientific study of human remains for legal purposes.

  • Post-mortem Analysis: The examination of deceased individuals to determine cause of death.
